It&#8217;s as big as California and consists of rivers, swamps, subtropical forest, savanna and scrubland.  It&#8217;s also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/articles\/the-poorest-countries-in-south-america.html\">3rd poorest country in South America<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/30.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"554\" src=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/30.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/30.jpg 800w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/30-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/30-768x532.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>They&#8217;re not rich, but they&#8217;re happy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why come to Paraguay &#8212; besides this being country #151 in my quest to visit every country in the world?  In 2019, Paraguay was ranked by a Gallup survey as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2019\/04\/most-positive-countries-paraguay-gallup-poll-2019\/\">the world&#8217;s happiest place<\/a> based on smiling, laughing, enjoying life and being treated with respect. This is a colorful city with decent hotels, interesting architecture, pretty parks and great restaurants &#8212; everything that I needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" src=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32-1024x759.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32-1024x759.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/32.jpg 1381w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>The view from my rooftop balcony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, here&#8217;s Paraguay in the heart of South America &#8212; with almost no tourists.  To me, this is a good thing.  From a practical point of view, few tourists means no queues, better service and lower prices.  I liked Paraguay because the native culture is intact.  90% of Paraguayans speak different forms of the Guarani language in addition to Spanish.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/36.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>In Asunci\u00f3n, your bus ride might include live music.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My Spanish is terrible.  Yet, the Paraguayans were very forgiving of my poor grammar and weak vocabulary. Yet, unlike Prague, when I visited this church, there was no fee and no crowds.  I had the place all to myself &#8230; except for a dozen music students practicing for a concert. At the ticket desk, I asked the chap selling tickets if I&#8217;d be hearing anything by Beethoven,   Mozart or Bach?  He looked puzzled at first, and then smiled and said &#8220;No&#8221;.  What I was treated to was far more entertaining than any concert by a dead European composer.  The concert turned out to be two hours of lively, jazzy, Latin tunes &#8212; accompanied by a chorus and dancers.  By the end of the evening, the audience was dancing in the aisles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/38.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/38-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/38.jpg 768w, https:\/\/zoa.com\/2019a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/38-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Beer on ice &#8212; what a great idea!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As usual, a four day visit to this country was too short.  But it was enough to get a taste for their delicious empanadas and the local beer.  I especially appreciated the Paraguayan attention to keeping beer as cold as possible.  In my four days here, I saw many smiles, heard lots of laughter and was treated with respect.
