William H. Redmond

Mr. Redmond was the Manager of the Luce-Redmond Chair Co. Established May 3, 1903, the company primarily produces parlor suits, fancy rockers, office and desk chairs, and dining room chairs, finished and upholstered. Furniture companies were largely responsible for the growth of Big Rapids during the early 20th century, being the city’s largest employer at the time.

Mr. Redmond had upwards of 35 years practical experience in the manufacture of chairs, and was considered one of the most expert of manufacturers in this particular line at the time. He learned his trade with the Detroit Chair Co., going from there to Grand Rapids and being for a number of years in the employ of the Phoenix Furniture Co., where he demonstrated his ability as an expert mechanic, being steadily advanced by them until he became their superintendent, which position he held for a number of years before leaving their employ. In all he was with them for 25 years.

P. W. Hathaway

Mr. Hathaway was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Luce-Redmond Chair Co. After he received his business college degree, he entered the employ of Studey & Barkley, of Grand Rapids, then the Halliday Lumber Co., and later with the W. B. Jarvis Co., of Grand Rapids, before joining W. H. Redmond to work for the Luce-Redmond Chair Co.
